The Australian Rugby Union are looking to unearth and develop the next generation of Olympians at the same time fine tune their squads for the start of the World-Series with the announcement that the Australian Men’s and Women’s Sevens Development teams will be competing alongside the top National Squads in October’s UON Central Coast Sevens.
The Olympic Gold Medal winning Aussie Pearls and National Men’s Sevens team who are both returning from the Rio Olympic Games will be joined by the national development teams with a focus on strong preparation for the start of the World-Series and working toward the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Tournament Director Craig Morgan said “we are pleased to be able to offer our national program an opportunity to prepare for the World-Series, we have set out to be an asset for the Sevens program and for the players to give them the chance to play on home soil in front of family and friends. The tournament will be a great opportunity for the players to prepare and push for spots in the top team who will want a strong hit out post Rio to ready themselves for the rigours of the World-Series”.
The UON Central Coast Sevens is perfect timing for the National Teams and National Development Squads to compete against quality opposition from around the world.
Morgan added “we hope the various players in the development squads and club sides push the national sides hard, they will appreciate the challenge and you never know the next sevens superstar could be discovered at the tournament”.
The UON Central Coast Sevens will feature some of the very best teams from around the world with the tournament regarded as one of the toughest invitational Sevens events around the globe.
Teams from Fiji, Tonga, Canada, Cook Islands, New Zealand and Japan will contest the tournament, which will be broadcast to a global audience live streamed around the world.
The tournament kicks off Friday 21st October with an under 17s youth boys and girls tournament followed by all of the international men’s and women’s action over Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd October.
